In cases of significant breast sagging and excess skin caused by aging, weight fluctuations, pregnancy and breastfeeding, breast lift surgery (or mastopexy) can restore the breasts to a higher, more aesthetically pleasing position. This type of breast surgery involves removing excess skin, tightening supportive tissue and reshaping the breasts, and breast implants can be incorporated if an increase in size or volume. A breast lift can be performed if implants are being removed (and not replaced) as well. No two breast lift surgeries are the same, and Dr. Shain Cuber takes an individualized approach to every procedure as well as the recovery process.
The extent of correction necessary is the main deciding factor when it comes to incisions, and it’s important to know that potentially visible scarring is often a trade-off associated with breast lift surgery. Depending on the degree of sagging and excess skin, incision options include beneath the crease of the breast, vertically from the crease up to the areola, and around the areola if it’s necessary to reposition the nipple. If breast implants are inserted, the same incisions are used.
What to Expect During Breast Lift Surgery Recovery
Breast lift surgery is generally performed on an outpatient basis, but you will need a responsible adult to stay with you for at least the first day or two. You will likely wake up after surgery with a compression garment that will need to be worn for a specific period. Depending on the extent of your breast surgery, you may have drains to help minimize swelling and facilitate healing. These will be removed within a few days after surgery. During your recovery, you will feel stiff and sore for about five days, and it’s important to avoid any straining, bending or lifting during this time. Stitches may be removed in stages, but all sutures are usually out within three weeks. Dr. Cuber will tell you when you can return to your regular activities but remember it’s important to take it slow. Most patients return to work within a week or so and can do light exercise within two weeks.
It is normal to experience numbness or loss of sensation in the nipples and areola after breast lift surgery, and this will subside with time. The incisions will continue to improve over the first few months after surgery as well. It’s also important to know that it can take several months for the breasts to settle into their final shape, so be patient. Once healing is complete, you can expect your breast lift results to last for 20 or more years as long as you maintain a stable weight.
